Colloquial Language in Magazines

In some magazines, they target their audiences through the use of colloquial language. For instance, Shout magazine uses words like "Tweet", "Slays" and "Bae" implies that the magazine is uses downward divergence to connect with their readers and by using multicultural London English they are able to know how their readers understand them as well the magazine understanding what the readers want. As their target audience are teenage girls they are simplifying words to get to know their readers as this is the language young teenage girls are more likely to use as they follow society's norms. Also, these words are associated with the magazine as it is based on social media activities of celebrities, fashion tips and tricks and youtuber inspirational stories they all link as they use the same language to put the reader in the same spot as the reader. This makes the audience feel like the magazine is personal to them as they use the same language that the reader would when talking to their friends.

Planning task: Cover lines for my magazine.

"Watch how Beyonce slays her dress on the red carpet!"
"Listen to The Weeknd's new banging album"
"Enter these fab new competitions to win prizes your friends would be well jel about"
"We talk to our bae Taylor Swift about her take on her new movie she's starring in"
"Wanna look like a star? Turn to page 34 to see what the stars are wearing on a casual day"
